Patients & Doctors to discuss real solutions to medical cost crisis.
As the Affordable Care Act is being implemented, and Americans learn what is in the bill, they are increasingly concerned that it’s the wrong solution to the wrong problem.
“The problem is not lack of health insurance for the poor-- it is lack of a timely, efficient way for the poor to access medical care without wasting taxpayer dollars, " states Dr. Alieta Eck, a New Jersey internist who serves as President of the Association of American and Surgeons (AAPS).
The real problems, and real solutions, will be discussed at a Patient and Physician Town Hall on May 18, 2012 in Somerset NJ.
"It is imperative to educate patients and doctors that the law signed by the President last year rehashes the same failed top-down schemes that created our problems in the first place. It is only going to make things worse," says AAPS Executive Director, Jane Orient, M.D.
"In order to increase access to care, and preserve the patient-physician relationship we must return to true free-market principles. Many physician members of AAPS are finding innovative, market-based practice models that allow them to work directly for their patients and break away from the bureaucratic quagmire of big-insurance and government payment," continues Dr. Orient.
Dr. Eck and her husband John Eck, MD founded the Zaraphath Clinic (www.zhcenter.org) a free clinic for the poor and uninsured that currently cares for 300-400 patients per month utilizing the donated services of volunteer physicians and nurses. They are leading an effort in New Jersey to save taxpayers money by encouraging physicians to volunteer to serve the poor in exchange for medical liability coverage.
"Government cannot provide health care. It can only meddle, restrict, coerce and underpay for services it promises to provide, all while taxing taxpayers beyond their ability to pay," says Dr. Eck.
Federally funded community health centers provide care at between $140-$280 tax dollars per patient visit. The Eck's volunteer clinic provides care to the poor for $13 per patient, one tenth to one twentieth the cost of a taxpayer funded clinic.
She continues, "The next generation of physicians will learn that private voluntary charity is far superior to bureaucratic government charity. The Medicaid system is bankrupting the states, and ObamaCare will only make things worse."
