Upper Stagecoach to Kick A** Hill - Advanced

Up for a midweek hike workout that's better than the gym?

We'll start out on on the Upper Stagecoach Trailhead, located on Russell Road, then head up Kick Ass Hill. These are a series of continuous hills with grades from 10 to 40 degrees up and each one is a climb that stretches from 30 to 70 feet in length.

As the title indicates, this hike is classified as advanced and all hikers are expected to keep up with the group's pace. Kick-a** Hill represents a challenge to most particularly if they haven't done it before. The group generally waits for everyone at the top of the hill then continue by crossing Foresthill Bridge and coming back up Upper Stagecoach.

Bring plenty of water, snacks, headlamp, poles if you have them and gloves to prevent slippage and most important, a happy attitude.

TRAILHEAD DIRECTIONS: Take I-80 towards Reno and exit at Lincoln Way in Auburn. Turn right at the stop sign, then left at the next street, which is Russell Road. Go down Russell Road, approximately a mile and you will see parking spaces on the left hand side of the road. Parking here is free.

Total mileage is approximately 6 miles and takes about 2 hours.

Can't remember who recommended the movie "The Way" The El Camino De Santiago Pilgrimage. I just got done watching it. Very inspiring. Except now I feel like packing up and heading to Spain to go do it myself. Thanks for the recommendation. Two thumbs up.

As always the hike was the highlight of the week! Fresh air, good conversation, smiles laughs and missing those who couldn't make it.

Nice to see kick ass hill in daylight after all these weeks of hiking it blind in the dark. It really is steep. Awesome night again. Thanks all for consistently showing up.....time to plan our next epic weekend hike I think?

Well did I say this group would turn my hair white? Well it did . It is because of all the great times we have had together on the trail and moon light picnics. Unbelievable friendships that have been the highlight of my time with all of you.

Another wonderful evening hike. The conditions were perfect on the hill - just damp enough to keep from slipping and it was still light when we got to the top! And Ron, with his awesome new hairdo - love it! It was a wonderful time with the greatest hiking group ever - thanks everyone for continuing to make these hikes so much fun.

You've used that excuse before - I think you should come up with a new one :) We'll miss you - see you next time!

It sounds like Ron got a new 'do! Can't wait to see it.

Dang it Ron. It's just going to make you more stream-lined and therefore faster. I struggle to keep up with you now...bring an extra heavy pack to give us a fighting chance. :-)

I'm wimping out again. I would love to see everyone. I see there will be rain which I would be ok hiking in but I hate the drive in the rain. Have fun and I hope to see everyone soon.

Oh, I was hoping you'd join us, but understand about driving in the rain. Have fun staying dry, don't worry about us.... :) I hope you join us soon!

Cheryl, I want to do this hike but since you rated it Advanced I am not sure if I should join you. How does it compare to Training Hill? I did that twice in 1 day a few weeks ago.

    March 4, 2014

    • Cheryl Z

Hi Nancy, it is steeper than Training Hill, but a shorter distance. I recommend gloves, due to the steepness, because sometimes we have to "grab" the ground to prevent slipping.
