When I was 18, my family was in Cancun, Mexico for vacation. I joined up with a couple of sailors to go on an afternoon sail to Puerto Morelos and then was going to take the bus back to Cancun. I asked some friends to tell my parents. We started out with no wind, just motoring, which slowed us down. Then a huge storm blew in and we were battling to get to Puerto Morelos and find the break in the coral reef to enter the port, made even more scary by the fact that our depth finder wasn't working properly. We were all decked out in foul weather gear. We finally made it into port safely at 9 pm that night. No more buses, no phones. Had to spend the night on the boat and return to Cancun next morning. I had a cool adventure; my mother a night of worrying. But thankfully all's well that ends well.
I have sailed in the BVI's, Greece, the Bahamas, the Chesapeake and on Lake Lanier in Georgia. Took a couple of courses a few years ago. Enjoy trading off crewing for a chance to be on the water.
Moved to Colorado 3 years ago and love it. After a career in the corporate world, working all over the world, I now focus on wildlife and nature conservation.
