Cuban Culture - presented by Yuri Costa

We will explore the wonders of Cuba
We will also get to know many people from Cuba living right here in Sarasota. Bring your smile...
Thursday January 23 - at 7 pm
8521 Vamo Rd, Sarasota, FL 34231 - The entrance is on the back of the building.

I will be cooking a lot for this meeting and I learned how to make the Black Bean Soup Cuban Style yesterday very similar to the Brazilian Feijoada.  So I need to know how many vegetarians will be there.  Then,  I will cook a separated pot and I will not place any meat on the soup.  If you would like to bring something that represents your country please feel free to do so and let me know please.  I always like to eat while listening to a great speech.

Perhaps in the near future we will visit Cuba let me know if you want to go there this year 2014. Lourdes Helena - Group organizer

I went to Cuba last year. They are grateful for tourists, $ and donations: we brought medical supplies to donate. There were no complaints about our shower use taking up drinking water supplies. I loved and recommend staying in a hotel or b&b on land. One can then interact with Cuban people, experience Cuban culture 24/7, all meals. Can easily take a Navy shower to save water: get wet, turn off water, soap, scrub, shampoo, shave etc., and then turn water back on for a quick rinse.

Thanks for all Members, new members and guests that came to our FIRST CULTURAL EVENT
I just want to clarify I cooked and provide the food. It was my birthday however, this was my gift to you. I am not retired I took the entire day off (Thursday) and I had to do the preparation ahead of time. The group needs to thank my friend Andrea Kranemburg to take a day off and came over to my home to cook the rice. I can cook the black bean soup but a fluffy rice I am still learning. The church did not pay for the meals neither the International group. The church provided the space and the Main Pastor said we can meet there again if we would like to do so.
I am looking for volunteers for the next cultural event if you would like to be the speaker and share your experiences please call me or text me at[masked] (many times I do not receive your email).
I hope to see you soon
    Love and peace to all!

Eye Opening Discussion about Cuba Today

    January 24, 2014

    Hi all,
I want to thank Helene for putting on such an interesting evening. I really enjoyed the firsthand accounts by people who actually lived in Cuba. Most revealing was the fact that there is little to no infrastructure, i.e., phone, internet, tv services. This helped me understand more clearly why the masses don't "rise up" and revolt.
Some of us got to sing Happy Birthday to Helene at the end, but she put a "great party" on for us even though it was her actual special day.

Hello--this will be my first with this group and am looking forward to it. I was in Cuba--flying from Montreal--in 1995, but was in the east only: Santiago, Guantanamo, the Sierra Maestra area. Would like to return and see Havana and vicinity; please keep me in mind if you plan something.

I am alone on Christmas and would also like to know about the X'Mass dinner..any info? Could I join in?

    December 15, 2013

  • Jacqueline B.

I received a long email describing the dinners held by the Cubans on Sundays and other. I have a new iPhone that I am not familiar with and I lost the email. Could the person who sent it, send it again. My husband and I would like to attend the X'Mass eve dinner. We are new to this area and are accustomed to celebrate X'Mass eve. There was a phone # to call. Thank you very much.
