Sorry I missed everyone last night, that event slipped past me and I never saw it coming!
Based in interest posted by Renee and others, I've taken the liberty of contacting Marsha Bloodworth. I think it is a great topic idea, and I would encourage everyone to bring their home remedies for health and wellbeing. I can facilitate a discussion if Marsha is unavailable having spent two years of my undergrad investigating why allopathic medicine (typical US model) has so little room for intuitive medicine models.
As a teaser:
1. did you know 70% of European doctors advocate/proscribe homeopathic remedies? Hippocrates had TWO axioms: "do no harm" and "like cures like". The second is the foundation of homeopathy.
2. if you have a stomach ache, chomp down some ginger root. That'll clear it up in moments (I don't travel overseas without it!)
3. Incidentally, did you know VoonDoon (or Voodoo) is a shamanic religious practice in Haiti of African decent? There has been rumors that the earthquake was a result of Loa activity...
Meet other science lovers in your area! Whether it's chemistry, biology, physics, or geology, gather to meet others who like science! Science Cafés are informal discussions on a topic, led by an expert. Be warned however - this isn't your professors boring, powerpoint-driven spiel - it happens at bars, restaurants, or coffee shops, and the dialogue can be very interesting (and informative). A moderator gives everyone a chance to speak, while keeping the discussion lively. Based on the European Saloon style Café Scientifique, the San Antonio Science Café is a rare opportunity to drink a beer (or other beverage of choice) and really dig your teeth into a topic that interests you. Future and past topics include Clean Water Goes Down the Drain, Corporate-subsidized Science Education for Kids, Why We Fall in Love (and is there a cure?), Age of the Universe, and Evolution of the Darwinist. Q: Who should join us? A: Residents or visitors of San Antonio who -enjoy exploring the city. -like learning. -like casual atmosphere with thoughtful discussion. San Antonio Science Café is sponsored by the Alamo Chapter of Sigma Xi (www.sigmaxi.org).
