Seeking alternative solutions is a wise idea. Let’s consider having another
meeting on an alternate day and time. I realize that is more difficult for the
meeting host(ess), but it could provide for a greater diversity in the
participants and perhaps we can meet the needs of more on this group. I see a
lot of names who are on the list, but only a few who attend – and as you point
out, that number is too many. Perhaps someone else would volunteer to lead this
if our regular meeting organizer(s) can’t make it.
I haven’t been able to come for the past 4 months because 6:30 pm is a
burden. I barely have enough time to get home from work, grab a bite to eat and
converse with my family before jumping back into the tail end of rush hour
traffic. Frankly, driving in rush hour twice per day is my limit; 7:00 pm I can
handle or at a location that doesn’t involve traversing a major transportation
artery. A couple of hours on a weekend would work better for me!
Let’s survey members through e-mail or Survey Monkey to determine a popular
alternative option. If we can get six people together, that would give
everyone ample time to read and offer constructive criticism in a 2 to 3 hour
time block. I attended a meeting at the Eline Branch Library in St. Matthews on
a Sunday afternoon and was satisfied with the meeting space. (Parking
isn’t any worse than at Quills.)
Collecting the data below might help us meet more local writer’s
I am best able to attend if this writer’s group meets on: Week Day [ ];

I have a suggestion for a place to meet: _______________
I attend: only if I can read [ ]; because I enjoy listening and commenting

** This is something I would like to see. I have never had the chance to
talk one-on-one with others in the group. It’s “Hello!” and straight to “Okay,
who wants to read first?”
With input from anyone willing to contribute, I am confident we can come up
with a solution to help everyone. I would be happy to do what I can to support

Subject: [scifiwriting-1] Member Limits at Quills.
As you might know, the fire marshal has informed us that we can only have 14
people in the meeting room at a time. Since we have been running well over
14 for the last few months, this causes a problem.
#1 - Our group is getting BIG. Yeah!
#2 - Not everyone that wants to read is getting the opportunity. Not
#3 We all want to participate. Yeah!
So here is an idea I wanted to bounce off you all. What would you say
to there being 2 meetings a month? One on the first Wednesday as we have
now and the second on say the 3rd Wednesday of the month. You could go to
either or both, but only the first 14 people to sign up with an RSVP could
attend. We would need to check with Quills to see if we could have that
date, it would need to be paid for as usual, and we would need someone to run
the meeting each month on the second session. Lizard runs the first
meeting of the month.
We could also look into yet another place where we could all fit, but it
would not solve the problem of everyone having time to read.
Suggestions??? Thoughts??? Protest posters?
