Scottish Hillwalking & Activities Group Pages

Hi there and welcome to the Scottish Hillwalkers and Activities Group.

This group was founded to be run by the members for the members and whilst we started out as a walking group, we also organise a range of other activities.

Hill Walking
We'll be doing a variety of walking - from single Munros, to multiple Munros, scrambling over ridges, weekends away and a selection of low level longer walks, pub walks and summer evening walks.

Note that the walks are not "led walks" with a professional guide. Think of these more as going walking with a group of friends (and while you may not be friends with everyone at the start of the walk, you will be by the end of it!) - everyone has to take responsibility for themselves as well as for each other, and everyone has a role to play (be it driving to the start, helping with the navigation on the walk or bringing the jaffa cakes!).

Rock climbing
We have a dedicated core of climbers. There are weekly meetups at the Glasgow Climbing Centre (top and lead), Braehead (autobelay) and The Climbing Academy (bouldering). We also run regular beginners sessions through the year. Trips to Ratho, the Alien Rock venues in Edinburgh and the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven are also organised. The group holds regular rock climbing meets at local crags when the weather is fine, and snow/ice climbs through the winter. Members are entitled to a range of discounts at the GCC.

In the summer months we organise a range of watersports activities, including kayaking, canoeing and gorge walking. Many of these activities are run by qualified instructors or involve hiring materials so do incur a charge.

The organiser of a walk or event is the point of contact for the walk. Organisers do not lead walks and are not responsible for others or instructing them. Organisers are volunteers who are sharing their own experience with others, so those of lesser experience should be aware of this.

As a club we treat Safety seriously. We want people to enjoy the range of activities we do in as safe a way as is possible. We have a dedicated Safety Officer who can be contacted regarding safety issues and we maintain a public log of incidents. There is also a link below discussing what you can do to think about your own Safety when you participate in any of the activities we do.

Scottish Hillwalking & Activities Group is a Mountaineering Council of Scotland affiliated club. This allows you to get discounted membership to the MCofS through us, enabling you to enjoy all the benefits and support the organisation that represents walkers and climbers in Scotland. We highly recommend that members join up. For full details of the benefits of MCofS membership and how to join, check out

We have a great group of members who are friendly and chatty and we usually have at least 2 or 3 new people on each event, so you won't be alone at your first meetup.

The group is completely free to join, although we may occasionally ask for a voluntary £1 donation to cover the meetup website fees.

If you have an idea for an activity or perhaps once you have been on a few events, would like to get involved in organising one, please feel free to get in touch with me.

Look forward to seeing you at a meetup soon,

Mountain Goat
