I am a Dive Master (over 1000 dives by now..including the Galapagos and many other wonderful islands in the carribean and elsewhere!!) I have heard great things about diver Dan's except I would recommend that you get PADI, as they are more respected around the world vs other certifications. There are lots of dive shops in Sunnyvale, (unfortunately the dive shop I went to retired...after a Palau trip)...my next trip is Palau,..and then the Red sea before it is gone...

PS...Divers that get certified in Monterrey (cold water are SO respected WW...but I don't dive cold any more...only surf there now...)

 

Surfing is more exercise so you stay warm!!..

I got my certification at Diver Dans www.diverdans.com .  They were terrific! The instructors were great!!   Although the class runs about[masked] dollars you do not have to buy all your equipment.  You do have to buy your snorkel, fins, boots, and gloves which when I looked around was pretty standard of most dive shops.  I was able to rent the wet suit, bcd,regulator and tanks.  Hope to see you down under soon :)

There are several certification agencies around that teach you how to dive safely and within your limits.  PADI is one of the largest and most popular.

PADI maintains a list of Dive Centers at: http://www.padi.com/padi/common/dcnr_distance/Default.aspx

You should be able to locate several dive shops that offer lessons in your area.

Good luck!  You may have already figured this out, but divers tend to be very friendly, outgoing people who enjoy the adventure and beauty of diving. So don't be afraid to ask questions, because we all are doing the same as we learn a little more from every dive!
