Announcing a new Meetup for The Greater Bay Area Scuba Lovers Meetup!

What: Monastery North

When: September 5,[masked]:00 AM

Monastery Beach North
Carmel River State Beach Highway One
Carmel, CA 93922

This dive is for Advanced Intermediates and Advanced divers. If you are unsure of your status first check the Files section for the posting on diver and dive skill levels and then shoot me an email and make your case smile.

Monastery North is a kelp forest dive. In calm conditions the entry can be intermediate. In rougher conditions this beach will send you home humbled.

This is a beautiful, beautiful kelp forest despite the moderate surge during great conditions which makes staying with your buddy a challenge. Photo potential here is remarkable and cameras are welcome but not recommended if conditions are too rough. I would leave my camera behind if the crawl out is going to be a beast but we can also have those earlier exiters assist as the photographers emerge. There are no facilities nearby and parking is limited to not blocking mansion driveways. Be courteous wherever you park-we are in a residential neighborhood. The beach itself is a walk down a flight of stairs and there is also great tidepooling at certain times of the year. Bring your own food and water and a bribe for me if you are not advanced wink.

This dive is around 30 feet in depth but the shallowness can be deceptive. In rougher conditions this dive is no joke and the spin cycle is on so we will only dive as conditions allow. I will come with a back up plan.

My favorite critters here are the vivid purple ringed top snails that cling to the kelp but the lemon nudibranchs come in a close second.

We will do 2 dives-so bring two full tanks!

Park near the top of the stairway entrance to the beach which is located at the cross section of Ocean View Avenue and Scenic Road in Carmel.
