FYI: Look of meet up changing soon & Knitting Meetup profile names are public

Hi knitters,

two pieces of group business and the second one is the most important.

NEW LOOK:  Meetup is changing the layout of the group home pages.  You don't have to do anything at this time, but be aware that photos are going to become more prominent. At any time, if you have photos to post, please feel free to add them to the meetup photo albums.  I've started a new album called "2010 Show & Tell", where anyone can post a photo and a description so we can see those finished objects that you aren't able to bring in in person

PRIVACY:  Our knitting meetup is ONLY PARTIALLY screened from google and casual browsers.  The current settings expose the names of group members and the message board.  Member profiles and meeting RSVP's and locations are private.  The benefit of this is that new members can locate us and find out what we are like before they join.

For many of us, however, the decision to keep the group partially open means that Knitting Meetup might be one of the only places on the internet that our full names appear in a google-friendly site.  When I was using my full name as my meetup name, my membership in this group was the #1 hit for my name on the open internet.  Since I prefer to let my public / career life dominate my google search results, I changed my name to spinnity, a.k.a. mary.  It is easy to do this.  Go to: http://www.meetup.com/account/ and review your "name" and "account" info.  Your account is the name you sign in with.  Your NAME is what appears in the membership list.  This name is public and searchable.

If you are a privacy nut, like me... I recommend you update your name to something more vague than your full, given name.

This privacy tip brought to you by the "None of your beeswax" Kitchen Ware Corporation
