July meetup proposal: "The I don't give a fuck about your framework edition"

From: Ryan E.
Sent on: Thursday, June 7, 2012 10:06 AM
I've been to a few SeattleJS meetups that are about a specific
framework or topic that I don't particularly care about. I've even
been arrogant enough to present my own framework for discussion. Most
of the time why I come to the meetups are to make new friends in the
JS community and network. Since there was a long hiatus in the meetups
and it has grown in size I propose we do something a little different:
I'll print out small forms for each participant in the meetup that
everyone has to fill out when they come in, and them tape them to
their shirts (or foreheads if you are daring). The forms would go
something like this:

- Name
- (checkbox) Looking for: job | projects
- (checkbox) Offering: job | projects
- Knowledgable in: ______
- Seeking knowledge of: _______
- Ask me about: _______

Then the actual meetup time would be structured like this:

- 30 minutes of drinking and mingling
- Roundtable call for 10 minute talks, anyone may stand up and give a
VERY brief summary of a proposed 10 minute talk on a relevant
development topic
- Voting on 10 minute talks, voting will be done by either a show of
hands or depending on the mood possibly the amount of noise made by
the crowd for each topic.
- The top 3 talks will be presented followed by 5 minutes of Q&A each.
Presenters will be mercilessly heckled for going over their allotted
time.
- 30 minutes of general Q&A / skillshare roundtable, anyone may stand
up and ask a question they would like answered, anyone may take the
stage & screen for 5 minutes to answer the question, or take the stage
and screen for 5 minutes to show something off that they have built or
a skill / technology they would like to share
- more mingling and drinking

My prepared 10 minute discussion will be on mobile backbone
development and the challenges I faced while building the Walmart
mobile web app:

http://mobile.wal...

and the framework that was created to build it:

http://walmartlab...

Should the meetup be held in the format I propose I will be
responsible for the forms and facilitate the voting and Q&A /
skillshare portions of the meetup. You are welcome to not vote for my
own talk if it bores you.

Cheers ~ Ryan
