Breaking Down the Buzz(words)

Adaptive. Big data. Next generation. Gamification. All these words you've seen in countless stories and pitches. But what do they all mean?

Join us for a group discussion (yes, that includes you in the audience!) as we dive deeper into the words that the industry takes for granted--and what we can do to sift OUT the reality from the hype.

Feel free to chime in with your favorite buzzwords in the comments below. And vote here for the ones that you'd most like to discuss!

Drinks and snacks will be provided courtesy of Orrick.

Special guests this evening include:

  • Brian Greenberg (CEO, Silicon Schools Fund)
  • Greg Klein (Director, Blended Learning, Rogers Family Foundation)
  • Tom Pryor (Community Manager, Khan Academy)
  • Michael Staton (Partner, Learn Capital)

Had an excellent time. Thank you for organizing this event. It gave me a chance to learn how EdTech works in CA. I would definitely want to work here. I am currently a master's student in Digital Media Design for Learning with Game Concentration at NYU and planing to move to San Francisco after I get my degree in May, 2014. Please see my LinkedIn (Aybuke Turker) for more information about my resume. I am interning here in San Francisco for summer so I am very new to the city. I am open to any kind of suggestion to find a nice productive work environment in San Francisco. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

I'm an EDsurge co-founder (early stage startup) (the Asian guy in the white striped dress shirt with dark red titanium glasses looking at his macbook and not his phone). If interested in joining us at EDgage find me tonight or reach out to us:
    Chris: [masked]
    Roger: [masked]

EDgage is a startup that recognizes that fast feedback loops accelerate learning. We're building a twitter-based tool that will improve communication and student learning. Our initial focus is secondary and higher education (inspired in part by MOOC learning architecture).

The two co-founders (Chris Wu & Roger Osorio) have sales/marketing, education, and research backgrounds. We're looking for a third engineering co-founder with a passion for K12/Higher Education, mobile app experience (iOS, android), and back-end development. You will be doing the initial development and designing the architecture of the product. Ultimately you will also hire and build out the engineering team.

Thanks for that article. But the emphasis 'cubicle' and 'self-guided' really worry me at this (high school) level. Isn't that community college? Feels like an abdication of what HS should be about. I see no reference to 'inspiration' in the article. That's what's needed, not GTD and time-management.

We're hiring at Edthena for an inside sales role. Would love to chat with folks who have sales experience and are interested to learn more. I have to head out by 8:40, so if we don't get a chance to connect in person, feel free to email me at adam at Been a while since I've been able to make one of these meetups, so I'm looking forward to the discussion.

I'm excited to discuss the development of the MetaUniversity, a future where courses are centralized and accessible to more learners, better reviewed for accreditation, and more focused on collaboration among teachers and students.

Let's talk about MOOCs, learning management systems, and how we set context for small group discussions based on the key insights spoken by instructors.
