Teacher Tank: Can your company stand the test?

In our first meetup of 2013, we’re taking a deep dive into the edtech entrepreneurial process to find which approaches have seen some measure and success, and which ones need to simmer a little longer (or be thrown out of the kitchen completely!).

There will be a ‘shark tank’ of educators on hand to call it like they see it. No pitches here -- just honest and meaningful dialogue around problem discovery, building and testing hypotheses, and getting the results that matter. We'll be focusing on three points:

  • Problem discovery
  • Prototyping
  • Feedback and iteration

The companies that we'll feed to the sharks are:

  • Bloomboard (PD tools and marketplace)
  • GlassLab (Game-based learning and assessment)
  • Meograph ("Four-dimensional" storytelling tool)

There'll be plenty of lessons and insights about what works in the development process of edtech tools. (And of course, a spectacular failure is just as informative!) Hope to see you there for a merry night of learning and schmoozing!

Your loyal EdSurgents,
Tony & Leonard

Loved the idea of edtech entrepreneurs pitching to teachers. Too fast, though, and didn't really give the entrepreneur a chance to go into any depth. Also, should clarify the objective - if to help the entrepreneur, not good to do it in a game-show like format.

I would've liked to see more audience participation and feedback to go along with the teacher feedback.

Interesting topic and concept. Would be nice it if started a little earlier. Maybe 6:00 or 6:30.

I thought the presentations could have been better and more in depth. And more of a conversation between the startups and educators.

Hi All. I apologize if this is bad etiquette, but I'm currently looking to join a new company who is searching for a hybrid talent. I have a portfolio. It would be great to meetup at the event. If any of you have leads, I would appreciate it.

Hi, I'm the co-founder of Chalktips, based in Southern CA. I'm going to be in SF next month and interested in presenting our startup. Our goal is to give the college essay a facelift and make it shareable and engaging. Thanks!

I am looking to network with any ed tech start ups involving their needs in developing products for mobile devices. This includes UX design, technology platforms, and testing. My company works with several educational technology companies in this area.

I can also share my experiences start ups on selling into the adoption market. I worked for 13 years as a sales rep for a variety of companies before my current role.

Besides the event, I will be meeting with companies in the Bay Area on Friday, January 25. I would love to schedule a time to talk in more detail if you prefer.
