For June's meetup, learn tips and tricks to scale python webapps to handle 50+ million users.

Abstract: LOLapps is one of the top providers of social games and user generated applications with 50+ million monthly uniques on Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. This session will focus on the top-down approach we took to scale our webapps for millions of users. Here are the 6 topics we will cover:

  • Why is performance a big issue for Social Media
  • How we profiled our apps and found bottlenecks using custom developed and existing middleware
  • The web application best practices we applied and results obtained
  • How we traced database connection leaks
  • Our caching strategies and the changes we made to speed up the memcache client
  • Results of our experiment using Paster and Tornado as our web servers

Jinal Jhaveri has been working on Python based applications for more than 8 years. He has held various technical roles working on high performance computing and solving web-scalability challenges at companies like MySpace and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. At MySpace he led the effort of Architecting and Developing a highly scalable web based chat system currently used by more than 120 Million users. Currently he is a Systems Architect at Lolapps Media, working on their scalability and performance challenges.

Andy Gayton has developed with python for the last 15 years, specializing in high volume web scaling for the passed 5 years. After an extensive history with architecting and query relational databases in high
performance environments he has an even more extensive curiosity in exploring the use of non-relational data stores. He is currently working as a performance architect for Lolapps Media part-time, while
co-founding a small startup.
