Shark Protectorate (a focus group of Power Scuba) is a San Diego grassroots effort created to accomplish four major things:
1. Support (heavily) the California anti-shark fin bill, AB376.
2. Stop San Diego restaurants from serving shark fin soup and trade in shark fins.
3. Stop the trafficking of all shark products in San Diego.
4. Stop the landing of sharks by local (or commercial) fishermen
Shark species are being decimated by the unsustainable take of sharks locally and world-wide. A significant percentage of that take is caused by the demand for shark fins used in shark fin soup (served widely in Asian restaurants).
Unsustainable is the keyword. Their birthrate is relatively slow. Our shark populations are disappearing... and apex predators can not disappear from the food chain without massive reprecussions reverberating throughout the oceans.
"Why does an extinction event (or near extinction event) have to occur for people to wake up and realize their actions are harming the very fiber of nature itself?" -Bill Powers
Shark Protectorate values the natural balance that has sharks at the top of an amazingly delicate food chain.
