New Meetup: El Cajon Mountain

From: Darren S.

Announcing a new Meetup for Sierra Mountaineering Group!

What: El Cajon Mountain

When: Thursday, November 11,[masked]:30 AM

Where: El Cajon Mountain Trailhead
I-8 East to Lake Jennings, go north 3 miles to El Monte Rd, turn right
El Cajon, CA 92019

I am climbing the South Arete of El Cajon Mountain on Veterans Day and am looking for adventurous souls who would like to join me. We will get a chance to summit this "often-seen, rarely-climbed" mountain and check out one of San Diegos most popular multi-pitch rock climbing areas as well.

Meet at the trailhead at 7:30 am. To get there, take Interstate 8 East from San Diego to Lake Jennings Rd. Go north 3 miles to El Monte Road and turn right. Proceed until you see a "No Camping/No Fires" sign on your left. You can park along the road there. If you RSVP, please give me your phone number so we can find each other. My cell is[masked]-1484.

There is not much information about this mountain. What I know is we will ascend a few miles on the climbers trail, and then up the South Arete to the summit at 3,675. It goes right by the big wall which is also on the south side. The "South Arete" is Class 3 with some exposure, and it climbs 3000 feet in less than two miles. No ropes are required, but I will be carrying a 30 meter 8mm and some gear for safety. If those who RSVP want to rock climb as well, I can also bring full length ropes and my rack and we can do some traditional (or perhaps sport) climbing afterward. Let me know if you are interested in that.

This is a "scouting" hike with the only objective are becoming familiar with this mountain, learning where the more technical routes are and having a little fun on Veterans Day. If you have been there before, please let me know.

If you haven't already, you need to have paid your membership dues to attend.
