What: Castle Peak 1st Anniversary Climb

When: Saturday, December 4,[masked]:30 AM

Where: Taylor and Eureka Rd / I-80 Park N Ride
Taylor and Eureka Rd
Roseville, CA 95661

As suggested among the membership, let's climb Castle Peak on Dec. 4th, in celebration of SMG's very successful first year. This triple-summitted peak provides an invigorating climb where we will gape down the vertical north side and take in the view that extends from beyond Lake Tahoe all the way to Sacramento. Castle Peak is part of an extinct volcano and the highest point right off Interstate 80 - (hint: bragging rights). This is a beginner level hike / climb with some exposed scrambling, and may be in winter conditions. This event is FREE. Those who are current on 2011 SMG membership can RSVP. To do that, click here.

This is a great training route on a fun peak that's close to a major highway, with just enough vertical (about 2,000 ft total) at a relatively high altitude, and a short roundtrip - about 4-6 miles, depending on the exact route. There is no established trail all the way to the true summit, so we will be making our own way up the trail to the west ridge, across the spine and the western and central summit to the high point on the east turret. The east side is the easiest route, about 30 feet of near vertical Class 3 scrambling with plentiful and large hand and footholds. Ropes and technical equipment are not required but would help those who are nervous. Once ascended, we will downclimb the same route and return the way we came.

Meetup at the Taylor Road Park and Ride at 6:30am. It is a little over an hour drive to the trailhead at the Castle Peak Sno-Park. Considering the driving and hiking time and the shorter available daylight, this will be a full day (dawn to dusk). Plan on a 1:00 pm turn around time.

This time of year there will be snow and possibly weather. Ice axe, crampons, and snowshoes are recommended. Good boots and trekking poles are a must. See GEAR LIST below.
