RailsBridge at Outright (Students)

Let's meet at Outright's office in Sunnyvale for a day of Rails learning. More details about the topics to be covered are forthcoming, but here's a tentative schedule:

Friday, March 22, 2013

6pm-9pm: Software Installfest (REQUIRED)

Please plan on being there for 30-90 minutes to get all software installed or updated. You may already have done this before, but we need to make sure you have the latest versions of the software we'll use.

Saturday, March 23, 2013

9:00am-4:30pm: Workshop

5pm: After-party for volunteers & attendees

It's necessary to do ALL of the following to complete registration:

1) Confirm that the email address you have listed in Meetup is actually one that you check on a regular basis. (We'll be sending updates, notifications, and to-dos prior to the event, and you'll lose your spot if you fail to respond in a timely manner.)

2) If you have a Mac, download and install Xcode on your laptop before coming to Installfest on Friday, January 25. (Xcode is the software that creates a coding environment for you to tinker with during the workshop.) The Xcode installer is a very large file that may take 2-3 hours to download. Doing it at work on Friday is totally legit; waiting until Friday night at the installfest is not. The installfest instructions for getting Xcode are here: http://installfest.railsbridge.org/installfest/install_xcode.

3) Fill out the registration form that we email to you. It will provide us with details about your operating system, the type and level of programming experience you have, and whether you will need childcare. You must fill out the registration form before 5pm on Monday, March[masked], so we can compile the final list of attendees and allow those on the waitlist to take open spots. If you need childcare, please make sure to get the registration form to us as soon as possible so we can work with you to arrange a safe environment for your kids!

Something came up unexpected and I missed the day. Is there a way to get the materials for self study?

    @ Roland and Charles,

We may have a spot or two open, depending on which class you'd fall into. Please fill out the student survey here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDlGSWVaNmxxZ3hUeUxjbnlaSkxISEE6MA

If, based on your survey, we can fit you into a class, either Steven! or I will let you know right away.

Awesome...I don't see the Meetup for Saturday (23rd). Is that still happening?

      March 22, 2013

    • Richa A.

I combined the installfest and the workshop into one event, since the RSVPs should apply to both.

      March 22, 2013

  • Roland P.

Is it too late to attend? I was not made aware of this event until yesterday.

    March 22, 2013

  • shikha

    Hi Richa,

I would like to attend this event. Do you still have some spots left?

    Thanks,
    Shikha

I filled out the survey on Sunday, but have not gotten the confirmation email.

    March 21, 2013

  • Steven! R.

If you have responded to the survey. You've received an email from [masked] confirming that we know you are coming. If you did not recieve such an email. Please send one to me at that same address.

Thanks everyone and see you tomorrow.

For absolute newbies, if you want to get a good introduction to web development concepts, check out: https://www.udacity.com/course/cs253

The examples are in Python. But they are applicable to Ruby. The instructors have done a great job. It is free.

Hi everyone, we're putting together the tentative class list for this weekend and we really need you to fill out the survey if you have not already. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDlGSWVaNmxxZ3hUeUxjbnlaSkxISEE6MA

    Thanks and see you Friday!

Download Oracle Virtual Box. It will be easier to setup the development environment regardless of whether you have Windows or Mac.

    February 27, 2013

    • Steven! R.

Bala, email me and I will be happy to explain why we don't do this. :)

      March 20, 2013

  • Catherine

Hi, I don't think I've received the registration email. Could you send it to me again? Thanks :)

    Hi,
I apologize if the answer to this was posted somewhere and I missed it, but is there a cover charge for this event? If so, how much?

    March 18, 2013

    • Richa A.

      No, no cover charge.

      March 18, 2013

  • Tané T.

Arrrgh, I have to cancel ... I'm in the middle of house-remodeling hell right now and have no time.

    March 18, 2013

    • Tané T.

The event sounds fantastic, though ... hope to attend something like this another time.

Yay being just a few blocks from the Caltrain station. :-)

    March 1, 2013

    • Richa A.

We're actually directly across the street from the Sunnyvale Caltrain station, so getting here should be pretty easy. :)

Hi Michelle, sorry for the late reply on this. I'm going to email out the student survey within the next day or two, and based on those replies we'll be able to gauge the demand for an intermediate track. I will get back to you ASAP about the planned level of instruction.

    March 6, 2013

  • Michelle B.

Are you having an intermediate track at this event?

    March 5, 2013

Last Rails bridge I went to in SF having a windows machine was fine. It took a little longer, but we got it done.

Is a Mac required or will a windows or linux laptop work for this? Thanks!

A former member removed the location. It was Outright, Inc.

    February 26, 2013

    Great, thanks!

    February 26, 2013

I can volunteer for few hours. I will confirm once I check my calendar.
