MMM Tri Peaks from the Sandstone Peak Trail Head / Malibu, CA

Details
Massive Multi Meetup: This is the brainchild of Don T., organizer for the Valencia Hiking Crew, who says "this should be an awesome event as a number of Hiking and Outdoors Meetups converge on the Tri-Peaks from various locations. From Hardcore Hiker to Advanced Beginner you should be able to find a Meetup doing a route tailored for you. If this were to get rained out the make-up date is March 19th." Most likely, we will join up with the Valencia Hiking Crew and tackle the Mishe Mowka trail together. These are the other groups that are currently participating and their distance/elevation gain: Valencia Hiking Crew ~ 7 mi. 1700 ft gain (approx) Weekday Trailblazers ~ 10 mi. 3000 ft. gain Fun in the Sun Club ~ 13-16 mi. 5500 ft. gain Thousand Oaks Hikers ~ 9 mi. 1700 ft. gain Calabasas Day Hikers ~ 12 mi. 3000 ft. gain Los Angeles Hiking Meetup ~ 7.2 mi. 1750 ft. gain Weekday Hikers ~ 7.2 mi. 1750 ft. gain [UPDATE 11-04-2010] The Valencia Hiking Crew are starting from the Sandstone Peak Trail Head parking and going clock wise. The Weekday Hikers and Los Angeles Hiking are going to do the counter clockwise route from the Mishe Mokwa Trail Head Parking. Please note: for those of you who went on the "big" group hike earlier this year at Satwiwa and complained about the size of that group (approximately 50) ... this is going to be far more hikers so ... keep that in mind! This is a 7-mile loop hike with an elevation gain of approximately 1,500 feet. For those of us that are concerned about our abilities, we have some time between now and then to get into gear so we can make it to the top! Don says "this is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains. Highlights include the spectacular Echo Cliffs where rock climbers ascend shear cliffs, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath, a giant split rock where kids can dash between the sheer walls, stunning giant sandstone formations, and breathtaking views from the top of Sandstone Peak and Inspiration point." WHEN & WHERE: We'll meet in the parking lot for the Mishe Mokwa Trail at 10:00A M (and will be at the top around 12pm)
Mishe Mokwa Trail is locared at 9410 Yerba Buena Rd. Malibu, CA 90265
DIRECTIONS: The trail head we will be using is the one for Sandstone Peak in the Circle X Ranch, which is located 5 miles from Pacific Coast Highway on Yerba Buena Road in Malibu. FromWestlake Village, exit on Westlake Blvd from the 101 Freeway, and follow it south for several miles as it merges with Mulholland highway. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon and it will become Yerba Buena Road as you cross the county line. Proceed on Yerba Buena Road for about 4.25 miles to trail head (about a mile before you hit the Circle X Ranch Ranger Station).
CARPOOL: I highly recommend carpooling since there are likely going to be a lot of cars converging on this location. If you’re interested in carpooling, please indicate that, your location, whether you can drive, and how many you can take. Please plan to share the cost of transportation with the person you carpool with. WHAT TO BRING: hiking/trail shoes, sunscreen, hat, insect repellent (optional), water and a lunch/snack . IMPORTANT!!!Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watch out for snakes, ticks, uneven footing, spectacular views, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous, rewarding and fun.
