My husband Kevin is a Java Swing developer for Storyrock which produces digital scrapbook software and he is helping me design a mobile app for my Enterprise Risk Management consulting firm ERM Strategies, LLC to help organizations identify their critical risks, assess those risks, analyze the interdependency of those risks, review their risk controls, monitor the progress of their critical risks, and create a value map showing the status of their critical risk before risk mitigation and after risk mitigation. Any suggestions on how to take an Excel spreadsheet which is used as a risk register with the following elements above and make it more dynamic and able to data mine information ? I also want to add Key Performance Indicators and Key Risk Indicators on the risk control section to help track the effectiveness of stated risk mitigation strategies.

If you already have your process figured out and just looking at the UI design for your app, I would start with building some quick mock ups and getting feedback from your existing customers. First make sure that the mobile platform is the best way for something like risk management, as it seems a bit information intensive. Second figure out the simplest design possible and only show the essential information unless user requests more.
Don't be afraid to release quickly and reiterate on the feedback. I'm not sure what you mean by being able to data mine the information, can you give any more details on that point?

      Hi Kristina,
I've used Excel for a lot of functions, including data query and extraction from ODBC data sources (and some non-ODBC sources using add-in drivers). I also have a lot of experience incorporating KPIs and other information on dashboards that are easy for non-subject matter users to understand. If you would like to meet over a cup of coffee some day, I'd be happy to discuss some solutions with you in person. If you are interested (don't worry I wont charge you for a conversation over coffee) let me know.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
