RE: [socialtechgroup] [Social Tech Group] New Feature - No More 'Maybe' option for RSVPs

From: Oli S.

I noticed this when I was creating a new meetup and sent a mail to meetup support yesterday, and they told me it was a few "feature". I've posted complaint on the comments page. My comment was:

"As far as I can see, everyone on this list who says that this is a good idea is someone who would take the default setting of disallowing 'maybe', so there's no-one at all who will actually benefit from this change, and (as seen above) it will annoy lots of people who use it. I find 'maybe' a useful setting in my meetups for all the reasons listed above."

I have a conspiracy theory that they've removed it to make the db schema easier or something, rather than driven by user request.

Subject: [socialtechgroup] [Social Tech Group] New Feature - No More 'Maybe' option for RSVPs

Hi All,

Here it an update from Meetup HQ about RSVP options. I am not entirely sure why the development team focused on removing an existing feature where else there are loads of features which urgently require their attention.

You can follow the discussion here and also read more here:

Please note that I don't work for and have no control or influence over the development team.

Our next meeting is on 23rd Dec for Xmas drinks, so look forward to seeing some of you then.

We're doing away with the option to RSVP as 'Maybe' to a Meetup.

When it comes to managing expectations for your Meetup, moderating 'Maybe' respondents generally created more work for Organizers. Maybe RSVPs also had a tendency to overcomplicate things like waiting lists, and made it harder for Organizers who charge fees to attendees. As best we can tell, the majority of folks who RSVPed 'Maybe' never actually made it to their Meetups.

Meetup isn't about maybe getting together sometime. It's about actually building local communities that meet face-to-face in the real world. The more we thought about it, the more we realized that 'Maybe' didn't really fit with what Meetup is all about.

How will this affect members?

Members who have already RSVPed 'Maybe' for an upcoming Meetup won't have their RSVPs suddenly dropped or anything. And Meetups where someone has already RSVPed 'Maybe' will still allow folks to RSVP 'Maybe' for the time being. Going forward, allowing 'Maybe' will no longer be an option.

How will this affect Organizers?

For most members and Organizers, this won't feel like much of a change -- about two-thirds of Meetups have had the option to allow for 'Maybe' RSVPs turned off. Of the 4.2 million(!) RSVPs we looked at in the last two months, only about 5% of all RSVPs were 'Maybe'.

For Organizers who have previously allowed for 'Maybe' RSVPs, we apologize for any inconvenience! We hope that simplifying the RSVP options will ultimately save you some time and cut down on flakiness.

Tegan is on Meetup's Community team.
