Announcing a new Meetup for Socrates Cafe!

Our topic for next time is one that many potential parents have wondered about and many actual parents have had to confront: the ethics of divorce. If I had time, I'd do a little research and try to provide an enticing introduction to the issue, but, alas, I'm too busy with work. One question we'll consider, I suspect, will be whether state divorce laws have been liberalized too much in the last century. Divorce has gone from being a fault-based, highly regulated, socially stigmatized, uncommon event to a no-fault, socially acceptable act that marks the end of an estimated 40% of marriages in the U.S. And even if there are good grounds for the laws to be as liberal as they currently are, it could still be that some divorces are objectionable on the grounds that couples give up too easily or disregard to the best interests of their children.

Please note that our next meeting is at the Panera on Kansas Expressway, just north of Kearney Street. I apologize to the folks who would prefer something farther south, but the other two Paneras in town with meeting rooms are usually already booked up on Saturday mornings. I appreciate member suggestions I've received recently for Hebrews Coffee Shop and The Buzz. Unfortunately, The Buzz doesn't have a meeting room -- and given our recent turnouts of around 20, we really need a room to ourselves -- and Hebrews' meeting room has, an employee told me, only 15 chairs.

Hope to see you on the 24th!

Yours in Socrates,
