I'm starting this group because I keep hearing over and over again that we need to talk about race relations and reach a point of reconciliation, yet I find that there is no such place to do that. People seem to be either oblivious to race or scared to mention it even though it plays a huge role in our culture at large. We will grapple with these issues by reading books that discuss race, slavery and African American culture and relate them to our current society. Our first book will be Post Traumatic Slavery Syndrome by Dr. Joy DeGruy Leary. We will work through the book and study guide and discuss the ideas in her book and how it applies to American culture as it is now. Anyone is welcome to join this group, no matter what race or ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation...My hope is that this can be a safe place to discuss sensitive issues and where people can voice their opinions and frustrations freely. Also, if you feel you'd like to introduce any books to the group, please feel free to do so. Disclaimer** This group is for RECONCILIATION...and so our main focus will be understanding others even if we are in disagreement with each other. I hope that we can suspend judgement until we understand the other person's point of view. Thank you!

Healing must occur on multiple levels because the injury occurred on multiple levels. We begin simply by telling the truth. - Dr Joy DeGruy Leary

I enjoyed meeting the Francis group members. The tone of the meeting was less intense than I expected, which is good. ...
