DemoCamp Edmonton 23

DemoCamp is an event that brings together developers, creatives, entrepreneurs and investors to share what they’ve been working on and to find others in the community interested in similar topics. For presenters, it’s a great way to get feedback on what you’re building from peers and the community, all in an informal setting. Started back in 2008, DemoCamp Edmonton has steadily grown into one of the largest in the country, with[masked] people attending each event.

The rules for DemoCamp are simple: 7 minutes to demo real, working products, followed by a few minutes for questions, and no slides allowed.

And the demos are:

• Project Quest

• Selfie Text

• PinShape

• DryRun

• SilentZone

Date: Wednesday, November 6th
Time: 6:45 pm doors open, 7 pm program starts
Location: TELUS Centre 150, University of Alberta Drinks and networking to follow at Hudson's on Campus.

Based on Kate's feedback, I've decided to camp outside the next DemoCamp and sell illegitimate tickets for $25 to people who have not visited before. I will then use these funds to buy beers for people in the bar afterwards, making me wildly popular. I will use this popularity to attract developers to partner with me to create a project management tool based on the Legend of Zelda, which I will demo at an upcoming DemoCamp. Of course, having spent all my money on beer, I won't be able to afford the $25 entry fee...

Kate, I agree that that specific setup made it tough to communicate with more than 1-2 people. Great feedback.

Networking at the event was discouraged and everyone was told to go directly to Hudson's after the last presenter, where the tiny room we all crammed into played loud music that was difficult to talk over, making networking here impossible. Certainly not worth the $50 we don't on our two tix.

Other than the music though, I though last night's event went off extremely well. Good demos, lots of new faces, interesting ideas. Another great job from Startup Edmonton -- thanks guys! I'm looking forward to the next one.

Thanks for pointing out that my $50 for 2 tix were actually for an upcoming event. There was some confusion as to why no one was taking tickets!! At any rate, the presentations were great - I stand by my comment that this was not an effective networking function. It would have been fabulous if the hosts had facilitated some sort of easy way for people to move around and talk in a comfortable manner, which of course is difficult in auditorium settings. Like Scott said, even just getting the bar to turn down the music in our room would have helped. But still the room was quite cramped for the 100+ registrations. My thought!! :)

Thanks for hosting last night, it was a lot of fun to show off our work and meet so many new people! Events like this are a big deal for fledgling startups like us at pinshape. Thanks to everyone who came out to watch, asked questions and gave us feedback. Feel free to get in touch any time.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
