Julia: A New Language for Data Analysis

Details
We are very excited to welcome John Myles White (http://www.johnmyleswhite.com/) to DC to talk about Julia (http://www.julialang.org), a new programming language oriented for fast data analyses. John is a co-author of the popular book "Machine Learning for Hackers (http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920018483.do)", a recent PhD from Princeton University, and one of the more prolific core developers of Julia, concentrating on the statistical functionalities of the language.
ABSTRACT:
I will introduce the basics of Julia, a new programming language that was released a year and a half ago and has since been receiving growing attention. Julia stands out from existing languages for data analysis like R and Python because Julia was designed to operate close to the metal, which means that well-written Julia code can come within a factor of 2 to the speed of similar C code. I'll also present some of the libraries that are starting to be developed for Julia, including support for DataFrames and GLM modeling.
LOCATION:
We will be meeting on the 5th floor of Microsoft offices in Chevy Chase, MD, just on the edge of DC. The offices are right above the Friendship Heights Metro station on the Red Line. There is public paid parking available below the building beside the Whole Foods Market, as well as several public lots within a block (maybe our sponsor ParkMe (http://www.parkme.com) will be of some help).
AGENDA:
6:30 -7:00 : Networking, Food and Drinks
7:00 - 8:00 : Talk by John Myles White
8:00 - 8:45 : Further networking and clean-up
9:00 - ? : Data Drinks (see below)
DATA DRINKS:
We will have space reserved in the basement of Clydes (5441 Wisconsin Ave) after the meetup for Data Drinks.
Looking forward to seeing you there!!!
