May Rated Beginners Open (U1000)

This tournament will be divided into multiple sections; this page is for the Rated Beginners Open (under 1000).

It will be played at a rate of Game in 25 with a five second delay. This event is limited to players rated 999 or lower, or unrated. It is dual rated, regular and quick.

Prizes: Trophy to first place, medals to second, top U800.

Location: Hampton Inn & Suites Dulles; 22700 Holiday Park Drive; Sterling, VA 20166. The hotel is near the intersection of Route 28 and Sterling Boulevard. Parking is ample and free.

Format: Swiss system pairing. G/25 d5, 4 rounds. Dual rated.

Schedule: Doors open at 10 a.m. Rounds 11:15, 12:30, 1:45, 3:00. Byes are available for any round. Notify the tournament director before 11 a.m. or the end of the previous round. (Fourth round byes must commit before the end of the second round.) Players with two or more byes are not eligible for a prize.

Entry fee: $25 online. Early bird rate: $20 till noon Wednesday 5/22. On site, $30. Unrateds free.

For unrated players, the entry fee reserves their spot in the tournament. It will be refunded after they complete the tournament.

U.S. Chess Federation membership is required. The USCF is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting chess in America. If you need to join the USCF or renew your membership, you can do it online at http://www.uschess.org (click on USCF and Join/Renew).

Bring your equipment: set, board, and clock, if you have them, plus a pen or pencil for keeping score and posting your result on the pairing sheet. It's also a good idea to bring your USCF card or a current Chess Life with your mailing label, in case any question arises regarding your USCF membership.

Reservation procedure: When you RSVP, I need a full name for the player (or their USCF ID). Each player should have their own membership in the Meetup.

As a practice, we do not pair family members; and we will attempt to honor other non-pairing requests, especially in the early rounds.

Online registrations close at 10:30 a.m. Everyone who is registered as "Going" will be paired for the first round. If a player has not appeared within 20 minutes after the scheduled start of the round, the tournament director may pair their opponent with another player.
