Rails install night

Having trouble getting Rails installed? Is installing the correct Ruby version giving you headaches? Maybe you've only just heard about Rails and would like to try it out but haven't gotten around to it yet?

We're organizing an install event for people not yet comfortable with the environment, to get you over that first step and any initial confusion. Doesn't matter what platform you're on, we'll help you out with getting things running so you can start hacking away at that project you've been thinking of starting!

Bring your laptop and excitement, we'll bring the food and Ruby ninjas.

Thanks Bence, Mike and Mikael - nearly up and running with 1.9.3 and rails 4 on heroku but can't get heroku to display application despite adding /users. Here is the url http://guarded-wave-6149.herokuapp.com/users/

Locally, on your laptop, run this in your testapp directory: rake routes

Test_app destroyed and re-done (I was tired and missed some stuff) works now on heroku. Mission accomplished. Thanks again for inspiration and help.

Got sticker app working on heroku using ruby 1.9.3 locally with rails 4. Heroku deploys rails 4 on ruby 2.0. Guess this is OK as it works. Should I have installed ruby 2.0 and then built sticker?

Ruby 1.9.3 with Rails 4 is perfect.

Just a protip, on Krakow RailsGirls event there was also install party. Most of devs had no idea how to install Rails on different versions of Windows since they never did it before :) So get ready for that!

I’d suggest a virtualized Linux, but that might introduce too much cognitive overhead?

Might be a couple of mins late

Suggested target for install night = desired setup for intro:
    - sqlite3
    - Git [masked])
    - rvm (1.22...)
    - ruby (2.0.0)
    - rails (4.0.0) with bundler, rake
    - heroku toolbelt

+ Github and Heroku accounts ...

Thoughts? - too much, no doubt. rvm overkill? I didn't use/need it until now but either way we can totally gloss over what it does (same with bundler and rake)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
