This month's read THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Coelho

PAULO COELHO'S enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom points Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasure found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transformation power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.

We had a good small group discussion of the book led by Janice. Everyone at our table had read the book and had ideas to share about the author's purpose in writing, thematic content, and style.

I'm new to St. Pete having spent the last 25 years in Venice, Ca., so this will be my virgin meeting. Thanks for having me. Really looking forward to the discussion.

    What is the "wait list""?

I wish I could make the November meeting because The Alchemist is one of my favorite books. Enjoy the discussion!

Will miss you. Have a good Thanksgiving.

It appears that After Dark will be the December selection. I need to obtain a copy of The Alchemist and start reading it.

    October 18, 2012

    • Kathie

Me, too. I have After Dark, which is really pretty good. Will try to squeeze in The Alchemist somehow.

      October 30, 2012

    • Janice T.

I'm reading The Alchemist. Finished After Dark and liked the surreal writing style.

For those of you who might not know about this, today is the Festival of Reading at SPC's St. Petersburg campus. About 40 authors, all subjects, book signings, and free! I attend every year and can never hear all the writers I want because there are so many good choices.

    October 20, 2012

    • Patricia P.

Thanks Janice! The Festival of Reading is held at the USFSP campus downtown, not SPC. I host one or more of the authors every year, and it is a great event.

      October 22, 2012

    • Janice T.

Oops! Since I attend every year, you would think I would have remembered USF.

Why does this November meetup not show up when you click the Upcoming Meetups link on the left of this page?

Thanksgiving is not a problem for me either. My social calendar becomes complicated at Christmas when my Asian families come home. Maybe other core members should chime in on this one?

    September 21, 2012

  • Janice T.

I noticed the November meeting is two days before Thanksgiving. This will not pose an issue for me, but it might not be a good week for all of the regulars. Trisha, is there any chance this date will change? You can put me down to be the Inquisitor; After Dark was my suggestion.

    September 21, 2012

    • Kathie

Not a problem for me. There might be a smaller group due to holiday plans for some members. Most of us won't know until closer to that time, myself included.

About a year ago, someone recommended After Dark to me. I have it on the list of books I want to read. I'm not a fan since I have not read any of his books but I have heard about how great Murakami is.

    September 16, 2012

    • Janice T.

It is short, about 200 pages. A good length since we will be getting into the holidays then.

      September 17, 2012

    • Janice T.

I will not be attending tonight; I had a conflicting appointment.

      September 18, 2012

  • Dianne J.

I found Zhivago questions here and there and have printed them out. Janice, you always did a great job leading us before Trish returned, so how about if you return to your leadership role for tonight's discussion?

    September 18, 2012

  • Patricia P.

That would be great; I am a fan.

    September 16, 2012

  • Janice T.

I thought the November selection was After Dark by Haruki Murakami.

    September 16, 2012

You are welcome. Now that we have strolled through Pasternak, perhaps we can wade through Dostoevsky and the Brothers. See you Tuesday.

Thanks, Dianne. I thought I remembered that the Grand Inquisitor was the host of the month, but the reference to Dostoevsky threw me. Brothers Karamazov is one of my all time faves, but may be longish for a book club read. The Grand Inquisitor is a famous chapter in Bros K.

    September 15, 2012

  • Dianne J.

I think things are becoming quite muddled, and I am not sure I have it right either but here is what I remember: September - Dr. Zhivago by Boris Pasternak; October - a book of your choice on witches; November - book not selected as yet. Grand Inquisitor still means the person asking discussion questions and we will be discussing the whole book, not just one chapter, of Zhivago.

    September 15, 2012

  • CherylAnn P.

What is the book for this month?

    September 15, 2012

  • Patricia P.

I am a little confused. Does this mean that we are reading just a chapter (Grand Inquisitor) rather than the book (Brothers Karamazov)?
I thought at first it was a joke name for the host....wasn't there a time when that was the case?

    September 15, 2012

  • Polly

Ah Dostoyevsky... this should be interesting.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
