Did you serve or do you have a loved one who has served in the current Iraq or Afghanistan wars?

The experts at the Program for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Studies at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City lead stress reduction classes in order to help equip participants with the tools necessary to combat the negative impact of stress on their lives.

Come learn facts about managing common stressors, share insights with other military personnel and their loved ones, and strengthen your own coping and that of your family.

These classes are for military service members, active duty as well as veterans, and spouses, significant others, parents, adult children (18 years or older), close relatives, and close friends of OIF/OEF service members.

The Program for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Studies is a well-established program within the Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Psychiatry. Our staff of licensed psychologists and psychiatrists is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art treatments, ones that have been shown by research to benefit the most people, provide the quickest relief, and promote lasting recovery for those affected by trauma, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and co-morbid substance use disorders.

Our mission is to ensure that military personnel, and their families, receive the highest quality of care.

Through the generous support of the McCormick Foundation and the Welcome Back Veterans Initiative, we offer a range of free services for U.S. military personnel and their families with an emphasis on the major mental health challenges facing those returning from combat (PTSD, depression, anxiety).

Other services include:
• Comprehensive PsychiatricEvaluation for OIF/OEF personnel and their families
• Treatment of trauma related diagnoses (e.g., PTSD, etc.) using “best practices” guidelines
• Couples and Family Therapy
• Psychological Services for Children of OIF/OEF personnel
• Group Therapy targeting sub-threshold problems/readjustment (e.g., support groups for spouses and surviving significant others)

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy
For those suffering from PTSD

In traditional exposure therapy, patients retell their personal experiences of trauma. However, people suffering from PTSD tend to avoid reminders of the trauma and numb their emotions. Cutting edge Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) incorporates these traditional aspects of therapy while utilizing a virtual world that helps patients overcome this emotional numbness and engage in the treatment necessary to begin healing.

In Virtual Iraq, the patient is immersed in computer graphic scenes of combat through a 3-D headset in a safe, controlled environment.
