San Diego Coastlines -- Treasure and Trouble

Details

http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/6/6/c/event_198474892.jpegOur 70 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline supports year-round outdoor recreation, such as surfing, boating, sailing and swimming. San Diego County also features some of the best beaches in United States. Our ocean is also the final dump for treated sewage, plus the overflow when the rains take untreated street and canyon runoff directly into the lagoons and surfline. Millions of visitors come to San Diego for our beaches, yet trash clean-ups yields tons of waste: from cigarette butts, plastic bags to engine oil and tires. How can we preserve this unique treasure? What do these organizations think of desalinization? How do we insure a functioning ecosystem and healthy water cycle?

Presentations from 3 local organizational leaders:
Serge Dedina, Wildcoast
Haley Jain Haggerstone, Surfrider San Diego
Megan Baehrens, San Diego Coastkeeper
