What is a good app? Virtue and ethics for app developers

  • Jul 21, 2014 · 7:00 PM

Can an app developer make good apps and thrive? Join us and let's discuss that on July 21.

Shannon Vallor is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Santa Clara University, where she writes and researches the ethics of emerging science and technologies including apps and social media.

Adria Richards is a software developer and problem solver with a passion for technology and career focus on education, advocacy and digital equality.

Dil-Domine Jacobe Leonares is the Founder and CEO of Los Angeles-based Breakr, a location-based anonymous chatroom.

I've asked them to join us in July to share their thoughts about what makes apps good, but instead of the usual focus on UX, tech, marketing, and profit, we're going to look at qualities that make our apps good for the world.

Thanks to the organizers and presenters for a great meetup last night. Very engaged discussion!

Many thanks to everyone involved in last night's meetup: Skype, Shannon, Adria, and everyone who listened, asked questions, and made comments. As we heard, Skype has several open iOS positions at the Palo Alto offices where we met. They're listed here: (you'll see a Microsoft logo there - remember that Skype is a part of Microsoft now - and you can scroll down to see the job descriptions). People with "varying experience levels" are encouraged to apply.

Also, if you'd like hear more from Shannon Vallor about ethics, her "Ethics for App Makers" session from Renaissance 2014 is on YouTube:

Two great speakers on a very important and woefully not talked about enough topic! Great location at Skype, lots and lots of great pizza and drinks. Loved the Q&A at the end.

Great topic Tim. Our inhouse apps are almost all "good" apps, especially the one we're working on now so it will be interesting to hear what the speakers have to say.

I would like to attempt to record and publish a video of the presentation. Is that possible?

      Yes, it is possible!
