Tacoma's Own Pagan Pub Moot!
This is a gathering for pagans of all paths to join and share fellowship and friendly conversation over a pint (or two). Its a great opportunity to get to know other pagans in the community in a comfortable, relaxed social environment, with no one guiding or directing the conversation.
What is a "moot"?
Generally speaking, "moot" is a very old word for a meeting or discussion from early Germanic languages. In modern times, pagans all over the English-speaking world have been gathering at pubs for pagan moots and witches' moots. This tradition is particularly marked in the UK, but other cities in the USA have pagan pub moots.
Why a Tacoma Moot?
I have been thinking about organizing a Pagan Moot in Tacoma for a couple of years now. I finally decided to give it a try. I attended a very enjoyable Druid pub meetup a couple of times in Minneapolis and met some great folks and heard some great music. I traveled extensively in Scotland a couple of years ago and when I looked up local pagan resources in the cities I visited, there was usually a pub moot listed. I thought, “why not here”? There are numerous opportunities for pagans to gather and meet publicly in Tacoma, but the events are usually (not always) structured. This is an opportunity to just hang out and have a good conversation with other pagan folk about shared topics of interest.
Why a Pub? What if I don’t drink?
There are plenty of great coffee and tea houses for pagans to gather in the absence of alcohol. I decided to organize a pub moot because that is the type of event I would enjoy and feel relaxed in. Non-drinkers are more than welcome to attend the moot if you feel comfortable in the pub environment in the presence of pagans drinking.
What if I’m not 21? What if I don’t go to pubs?
Sorry. You may think about organizing a pagan youth meetup or an all-ages meetup outside of a pub environment.
Please don’t! Personal responsibility is an extremely important facet of my personal pagan path. I hope you will feel the same. If you are planning to have more than one or two drinks in two hours, please bring a designated driver, call a cab, walk, or take the bus.
Eat, Drink, and Merry Meet!
