The purpose of this group is for people to feel good. Regardless of past, pathways, skills or not, it is here to immerse our spirits in its healing harmonies. All are welcome. - Chris - 727 422 6162 (cell)

5/8/2015

Last 5 months of 2015 can meet 1st Sunday at Clearwater Main Library on Osceola. They asked that we park on the lower level (west) lot. There is no cost to attend.  We would have the big room on the first floor.

2/25/2015

I happened to unexpectedly catch the torch for this group after about one year of participation.  I was delighted to find full acceptance with my eclectic preferences. All music is important to me and I believe it has great therapeutic value. The first order of business is to simply keep the thing alive for some 300+ people who value music and its creation. We'll keep a monthly meeting but it would also be fun to have a few other opportunities around the Tampa Bay Area and to explore other genres, like the beloved pop standards we heard growing up. I'll be glad to share site privileges with anyone who wants to help run the show(s).

----------------------------------------------------

Our former format follows, for information purposes (Rick):

Join with us as we sing songs of love, war, strife, justice, good times, work and protest, as well as spirituals, ballads, shanties and so much more! Our hootenannies take place the first Saturday of every month in a comfortable indoor location in central St Petersburg, FL.  We meet from 1:00 to 3:30 pm and take a break halfway through to enjoy the fellowship of like-minded people.  If you know this music, want to sing it LOUD AND PROUD and/or play an instrument, we are looking forward to meeting you!!!

SOJO is about singing all kinds of music ranging from well-known traditional songs, to old-time Americana, all the way around to songs by the big names in folk and folk/rock from the '50s up to the present. And what's a sing along without some Beatles, pop songs, rock songs, traditional British songs and Irish folk songs? We mix it up, but folk music is our anchor.

We use the Rise Up Singing songbook as our main source for most of our songs, but participants may also bring lyrics and chords to songs not found in the book and hand out copies. We gather in a circle and each member selects a song for the group to sing and play. Each member also has the option of going solo, teaching a song, leading an alternate version of a song, or passing altogether. But if you know the song, we want you to participate!

The first Sing Out Jam Out ("SOJO") started in March 2007 in Arlington, VA, followed in February 2011 by the Ft Lauderdale area SOJO. Now Tampa Bay gets to experience the magical camaraderie of getting together monthly to sing and play folk, folk/rock and pop songs we all know and love (or are willing to learn!).

While the emphasis is on singing, your musical instrument is a welcome and valuable accompaniment to the chorus of voices. We warmly welcome harmonicas, ukuleles, mandolins, banjos, dulcimers, fiddles, basses, autoharps, and any other instruments that can blend well. Some instrumentalists sing along with us, some just play. All the rest make a joyful noise with just their voices.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
