Tech Talk: Q & A on Bitcoin and Digital Currency in the New Millenium

Come join local "experts" for a roundtable discussion on Bitcoin, money .vs. currency, and currency trading in the new millenium.

What it's about:  This topic was spurred by a recent IgniteBend talk on Bitcoin, which has led to a number of follow-on conversations around the office about the technical and social significance of "digital cash".  Everyone involved has lots of questions so we thought we'd provide a forum for people to get together and compare notes.

What you'll learn:  If demand warrants, each of the "experts" (yes, in quotes, that) will weigh in with a brief overview of what they know about digital currency/cash and why it's interesting.   From there this will be an audience driven discussion.  Our experts so far include:

- Robert Kieffer, software developer / resident BitCoin geek
- Scott Warner, entrepreneur
- Doug (?), currency trader

We'll be sending out links to some cheat sheets to help people get informed and hopefully drive discussion.

What you can contribute: Know someone who has interesting expertise and insight into the nature of digital cash?  Send a note to Robert and we'll see what we can do.  (Note: we can call remote people in via Google Hangouts if you have someone who might be particularly insightful.)

Yea, i'm about to get a set up, but waiting until after the holidays when i'll have more time. Graphic cards are getting pretty pricey!

Be careful there the difficulty rate has gotten so high with the arrival of the ASIC processors, that I've actually shut down my GPU mining. Currently I'm just running a Butterfly Labs Jalepeno or 5GHs box, but looking at the site just now looks like they have stopped offering it. There smallest unit is 25Ghs at $1,[masked]

So i've been hearing. I still don't know too much about it, but wanting to get a box set up soon. Litecoin seems like its still got some time left in mining.

Man I totally missed this one, wish I hadn't. So is anyone else locally still doing mining? This past month has certainly been interesting on the bitcoin value front.

There were about a dozen or so who attended of all ages and from all walks of life, from a high schooler to a few grey heads. Very interesting discussion. Thank you Robert, for hosting this event, and for the informative links you sent out the day before. It will be interesting to see how Bitcoin and other digital currencies develop, and whether they will be widely adopted or the current economic powers will figure out how to strangle this developing technology.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
