Yuletide Myths & Gifts: Wreaths

Yuletide Myths & Gifts – Wreaths

The wind is blustery and howling as snowflakes sweep to earth. Nights are growing longer until darkness overcomes daylight during the Winter Solstice.  Homes will soon be decorated for the Fire Festival with garlands of holly, ivy and evergreens. Mistletoe will be hung from ceilings. The Yule tree is waiting to be adorned with its traditional ornaments. The Yule log has been selected. Aromas of cloves and ginger fill the air from treats being baked for the Yule feast. People are decorating Yule wreaths while sitting by fires in hearths. Some of the wreaths will decorate their homes while others will be given to friends and relatives as presents.

The wreath is a decoration that originated with the ancient Celtic people of Germany and Scandinavia. However, it was also an ancient custom of the Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews for they all recognized the evergreen as the tree of life. The wreath has significant meaning for the season. It's circular shape represents eternity, for it has no beginning and no end. The centerpiece of  the Celtic Winter Solstice rituals was what was called "the living wreath".  Tonight we will learn about the origins of and myths surrounding wreaths in several different cultures. Then we will craft our own wreaths with dries flowers, herbs, evergreens, berries and ribbons. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Yule, or solstice there are options for you. Enjoy music, cookies and cider as you let your creative juices flow and celebrate this festive season with one another. Come join the party!

All materials are included there is nothing you need to bring except your creativity.
