SUPER FULL MOONRISE HIKE WOW!

Details

Hey Everyone,

What is a Super Full moon?

The super full moon is also referred to and used by some astrologers as the “supermoon”, which is a term coined by noted astrologer, Richard Nolle. According to his definition, the phenomenon occurs when the full moon is within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth.

The distance of the moon from the Earth varies throughout the month and year. The average distance is about 238,000 miles (382,900 kilometers). This night, the moon will approach 221,853 miles at 4:30 am, but will rise in spectacular glory at 8:29 pm.

We'll hike to the top of Saddle Peak in Calabasas where we'll enjoy some wine and cheese while we watch the moonrise!

Don't let the word "peak" scare you. Although there is a steady climb on this one, it's moderate and worth it to get to the top.

We'll pass unusual sandstone outcroppings on our climb to the top and be awarded with fantastic views of the Pacific, San Fernando, Malibu and beyond.

This is not to be missed!

Miles: 3.2 approx

Elevation gain/loss: 950 ft.

Duration: about 3 hours

Trail: obvious routes and marked single track trail on packed earth

Please bring a snack and/or wine to share. We'll be packing in our goodies to share at the top.

We’ll be doing some of this hike in the dusk/dark but the bright moon will guide us back down. Have the usual lugsoles, water, etc. I suggest wearing layers in case it gets chilly.

DIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway exit Las Virgenes Rd. heading south towards Malibu. Make a left turn on Mulholland Highway and go about 4 miles to Stunt Rd and turn right. Keep an eye out for Stunt Rd, since it'll come up on you quickly after a curve in the road.

Take Stunt Rd. exactly 2.9 miles where you'll see a turnout on the left hand side where I'll be waiting. This is across the street from the trailhead and where we'll meet. Parking is limited here but there is a larger parking turnout nearby at miler marker 3. Carpooling is recommended.
