Hondo Canyon has been accused of having views reminding you of the Grand Canyon (that may be slightly exaggerated) but it is no less breathtaking! Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail, this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation. We'll start out hiking on a moderate trail shaded by live oaks but before long, we'll start switchbacks on the steep southern slope as we make our ascent to the top.

Difficulty: I rate this hike as strenuous because of the final ascent.

Trail: Packed earth on a well maintained, shady trail.

DIRECTIONS: From Thousand Oaks: take the 101 south and exit Valley Circle Blvd., staying in the center turn lane, making a left onto Calabasas Rd. Immediately get into the right turn lane and make your first right on Mulholland Dr. Turn right on Valmar Rd. which turns into Old Topanga Cyn. Road. Stay on Old Topanga Cyn. Road going approx. 7 miles to the turn out on the south side of the street.

The trailhead is off Old Topanga Canyon Road 0.4 miles just before the junction with Topanga Canyon Blvd.
