Note that this is an overnight backpacking trip, not a dayhike.
LENGTH: 8-miles round trip.
ELEVATION GAIN: 1391 feet.
FACILITIES: Restrooms at Trailhead.
CARPOOL INFORMATION: Please Meet at 7:00 AM in the Fort McDowell Casino parking lot on the B-line highway.
DIRECTIONS: From Payson, take Arizona 87 north almost 18 miles to Strawberry. At the Strawberry Lodge, take Fossil Creek Road (Forest Road 708) west 4.6 miles. The trailhead is a couple hundred yards north of FR 708. The first 2.4 miles of Fossil Creek Road are paved. The remainder is a well-graded dirt road that, in good weather, should be passable by most cars.
PLAN: This will be a relaxing two day backpacking trip to Fossil Springs. We'll hike down Saturday morning and hike out late in the day on Sunday -- hopefully after it has cooled off a little. In between we'll have almost two full days of swimming, jumping, camping, eating, and exploring.
This is relatively easy for a backpacking trip, so new backpackers are welcome, but I would recommend not waiting until the last minute to ask me what you need to bring or how to prepare. Also keep in mind that even though it's short, the hike out is a little steep and can be difficult if it's hot and you're carrying a large pack. Well behaved dogs are welcome, but they also need to be able to handle the heat.
