Yarra and Botanics Walk discussing 'Hollow Air' by Verity Borthwick
We'll meet at the spot where Fed Square meets the Princes Bridge over the Yarra (near the pedestrian crossing closest to the river from Flinders St, on the Fed Square side).
We'll walk for about 6km along the Yarra River, through the Botanic Gardens and back along the river to Federation Square for a coffee after the walk.
This month, we're reading and talking about 'Hollow Air' by Verity Borthwick
The blurb:
**"Isolation can be hard on a person. It can be hard on the mind, especially when the bush closes in on you in the darkness of night.**
In the tin fields of Far North Queensland, Sarah, a fly-in-fly-out geologist, is working alone at a remote mine site. She spends her time in a sort of limbo, never quite fitting into her life at site or back home in Sydney with her fiancé.
Strange things keep happening at the mine site, and Sarah can try to explain them away as the ramblings of a lonely mind, but there are dead bodies from a mining accident a century ago at the old Dulcie Ada mine, still buried beneath more than a hundred metres of rock.
**A deeply moving novel that explores the friction that comes with the desire to understand the secrets of the Earth coupled with the knowledge that this can exact a toll.**"
Goodreads rating: 3.94
How does a walking bookclub work?
Like a normal bookclub, we talk about the book, what else we're reading, have read, or want to read (as well as a few tangents into life outside literature!) but we do it while walking around Melbourne and then over a coffee. We often split into smaller groups as we walk, but we also regroup through the walk.
Should I read the book beforehand?
The conversation will be more interesting if you do, but you can still come along if you haven't finished it yet!
Do I need to bring anything?
**Comfy** walking shoes, drinking water, some money for coffee or a bite to eat after if you wish. No need to bring the book unless you want to.
No shows
No shows (RSVPing yes and not attending) mean the group waits unnecessarily for those who are not coming, thinking you are running a little late. It’s absolutely fine to change your rsvp for any reason up until the walk begins, and you don’t need to leave a comment, send a message or give a reason, but if you don't click that 'change rsvp' button, you may be removed from the group.
Membership Fee
Did you know that while it is free to attend most events, Meetup charges organisers about $600 a year to organise a group? Members of the Walking Book Club are asked to pay a membership fee of $10 per year (not per event) to help cover this cost. When you join the group, you'll be automatically given a three month trial so you can see what the group is like, without needing to make any payment. If you would like to continue attending events after this, please follow Meetup's instructions to pay the $6.50US/approx $10AUD fee once per year (or contact group organisers if you would prefer to make payment using paypal, payID, cash or bank transfer).
[FREE] Weekly English Class & Community Meetup
Join us for a friendly and relaxed English meetup in South Melbourne! This gathering is perfect for anyone who wants to practise English, meet new friends, and feel part of a welcoming community. Whether you’re an international student, new to Melbourne, or simply looking to connect with others, you’ll find a supportive space to learn and grow.
Each week, we run **two simple sessions**: **Daily English**, where you learn useful everyday vocabulary, and **Learning English from the Bible**, where we explore short passages in clear, beginner-friendly English. You’ll also meet people from different cultures and enjoy meaningful conversations in a warm, inclusive environment.
Come along, make new friends, and enjoy learning English in a place where everyone is welcome. We’d love to meet you!
Understanding Our Support Needs (And Each Other's)
Neurodivergent brains come with their own operating manuals — but most of us were never handed ours. Some of us run hot on sensory input, others stall out on transitions, some need movement to think, others need silence to function. The tricky part is that our needs are often invisible, even to ourselves, until something tips us over.
This month at Neurospicy Bayside, we're slowing down to look at two questions:
* What support do I actually need to feel okay and do my best work?
* What might the people around me need that I've never thought to ask about?
We'll talk about the kinds of accommodations that exist (formal and informal — at work, at home, in social spaces), share what's worked and what hasn't, and gently map out where each of us tends to struggle. The goal isn't to fix anyone. It's to build a richer vocabulary for our own needs and a more compassionate lens for the people in our lives who might be quietly white-knuckling things we'd never guess.
Bring yourself as you are. Stim, doodle, pace, listen, share as much or as little as feels right. Fidgets and ear defenders welcome. There's no expectation to disclose anything you don't want to.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Find Your Personality Match - Make Friends (Age group: 25-45))
🌟 **A new one-on-one, personality-based connection experience**
Many of you have been asking about structured events and if I’d ever bring them back.
Well… here it is - a new version, more intentional, and built around something I care about : **matching people based on personality.**
Over the years, I’ve seen how hard it can be to find people you truly click with as adults. Small talk goes nowhere, and most events don’t give you the space for real conversation.
💫 **What to Expect**
This is not speed dating, and it’s not a big mixer.
It’s a curated, one-on-one connection experience where you’ll meet a few people who’ve been matched to you based on personality and vibe.
Expect:
* A cosy, comfortable venue
* A hosted structure so you’re never left awkwardly standing around
* A series of guided one-on-one conversations
* A relaxed atmosphere where you can genuinely be yourself
* This is not dating focused event, there will be a seperate one for dating
Each conversation is designed to feel natural — because the match is based on compatibility
Get your tickets here - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/1988143914969?aff=oddtdtcreator
🧭 **Before the Event**
Once you get your Eventbrite ticket, you’ll receive a **short personality test (If you have already taken the test at a previous event you don't need to do it again)**.
It takes only a few minutes but helps us understand your communication style, energy, and compatibility factors.
This is how we curate meaningful one-on-one pairings for the event.
🌿 **Come Join Us**
If you’re tired of small talk and ready to meet people who truly fit your personality, this is for you.
A warm, intentional space created for deeper conversations and genuine chemistry - whether it becomes friendship, something romantic, or just a surprisingly great chat.
RSVP now — spots are kept limited to ensure quality one-on-one time.
Sober Sunday: Walk, talk, coffee and lunch (ticketed) - still going ahead!
Due to popularity, we are doing another walk, talk, lunch and coffee, this time as requested, in the city. Fitroy Gardens.
Ticket here: [Walk, talk and lunch - Fitzroy Gardens](https://www.trybooking.com/DMDSE)
Meeting at Kere Kere Green cafe, on the grassed area. It's a nice open space to meet, mingle, talk before making our way around the gardens, over to The Tan and back.
Meeting at 10:30am, starting walk around the gardens at 11am, walk shall take about 70 mins, to then make our way back to Kere Kere Green Cafe.
Grab your coffee as we meet and then lunch once we make it back. The cafe has seating inside/outside or we can stand on the outside grassed area.
There is prospect of rain but come prepared with umbrella and rain coat. If it is too wet, we can just stay at cafe for a coffee.
Dogs welcomed! Please do NOT be late, smell of alcohol/be hungover (Sober Sunday) or have bad BO.
Being a Sunday, there should be parking around, plenty of public transport options as well.
Your ticket goes towards the associated costs of running the group and it is ONLY $5!

CREATE YOUR MAGNETIC VOICE GUIDE
**Stand Out, Stop Competing and Build a Category of One Brand**
In a world oversaturated with AI content and everyone sounding the same, the winning brands are raw, real and unapologetically themselves. In this workshop, one of our incredible members - Erin Morris - will show you how to double down on the one key differentiator no one can copy – you!
When you have a brand that is YOUniquely you, you stop being another [coach / service provider / e-commerce store] and become a category of one. People find you on Instagram and feel like they know you. Sales become easier because you have a warm and engaged audience. The opportunities you thought were out of your league – speaking gigs, major retailers, collaborations – start seeking you out. Everything becomes easier, and growth becomes faster when you simply own your voice.
During this workshop, you’ll…
* Create your own magnetic brand voice guide.
* Learn to embody your authentic voice, so you attract “pinch me” dream customers who are excited to work and buy from you.
* Reclaim the voice you lost to the robots or who you “thought” you needed to be to make sales.
* Naturally stand out in saturated markets without resorting to being the loudest (or most unethical) voice in the room.
* Learn how to use your brand voice guide so everything you write becomes instantly recognisable as you, or hand it to a contractor so every word they write sounds like you wrote it.
**About the host**
*Erin Morris is a copywriter, messaging and launch strategist for impact-driven founders. Erin partners with heart-centred women to help them stand out, fill their group programs and have profitable, high-converting launches, so they stop trading time for money, scale their income and impact and live a life of purpose, passion and freedom.*
*Her connection-first framework builds genuine relationships with readers to ethically increase demand and sales. This approach has helped clients sell-out programs, have multiple six-figure launches and consistently beat conversion benchmarks.*
*Influenced by almost 2 decades of full-time travel and living around the world, Erin is deeply committed to helping her clients live their biggest, most fulfilling lives and believes that powerful copywriting and obsession-worthy messaging is how you achieve this.*
