General Meeting - Exploring Pluto and the Great Planet Debate

  • Jan 23, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Tonight's guest speaker will be Ian Hewitt, a co-chair of the Raleigh Astronomy Club, and a Solar System Ambassador for NASA, part of a public outreach program of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology.

NASA has an unmanned mission on its way to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt which will arrive in about 2 years. This presentation will talk a bit about the history of Pluto, its place in the Kuiper Belt, and the mission itself. Pluto has ignited controversy in the public over the last decade with its reclassification and this provides a fascinating example of public perception vs. the evolution of scientific understanding of the Solar System.

Looking forward to meeting everybody. Do most folks eat when before the meeting or when they get there?

Most people arrive at 6:15PM and start ordering drinks or food. No one is expected to order, of course, but I find it best to put my order in right away so that my food arrives as the speakers begin their presentation. We always have time to mingle after the presentations, so that's another opportunity to eat if one is still hungry. Blinco's has typical bar meals, but what they lack in exotic yummynesss, they usually make up with friendly and accommodating service.
