Vegetarian or a vegan? Why?

Vegetarian with no processed foods -- I make nearly everything from scratch. Veganism seems too much like a religion and not necessarily healthier or environmentally friendlier. Why vegetarian? (1) Ethical reasons (animal treatment, chemicals, environmental impact). (2) Heath reasons (I'm healthy and I'd like to stay that way). (3) Weight control. One can't be overweight eating raw veggies and fruit. We don't juice -- we use a Vitamix which results in no waste and retains all of the fiber and nutrients. We never used transitional processed products (e.g., Tofu burgers) -- most everything we buy is in the bulk section at Whole Foods or in the produce section. We're vegetarian and organic. To us, being vegetarians also means eschewing processed food -- we don't consume products that have a list of ingredients. And no soda, alcohol, tobacco.

If yes, how long have you been a vegetarian/vegan?

6+ months (except when we go to other people's houses since we're good guests and eat whatever is served). We'd eat eggs if we could have chickens (HOA forbids them) like some other people I know. I'd love to have 2 free range chickens in the backyard and know exactly what they're eating.

What would you like to do with/get from this group?

My wife and I would like to meet other people. Learn from others and share what we've learned.

Introduction

Over the course of 6+ months, my wife and I weaned ourselves off of all meat and onto far more vegetables. Now much of our diet is mostly raw vegetables and fruit. We lost 20% of our weight and our BMI is right on target.
