Overview
2010 marks the 10th year for the Top Gun Triathlon. Fort De Soto park is ranked one of the top-ten beaches in the United States; nine hundred unspoiled acres surround you. First timers, we anticipate that you will have a great first triathlon at the Top Gun Triathlon. To all, we ask that you enjoy your surroundings and please leave the park cleaner than you found it.
The Top Gun Triathlon is limited to 1000 participants and traditionally sells out well before race day so please sign up today to guarantee your spot. There is no race day registration. No refunds.
Course Description
There is a 1/4 mile swim in the gulf of mexico, followed by a ten mile bike and 3.1 mile run.
The surf conditions are really going to vary based on the weather conditions. Generally, the Gulf coast is calmer than the Atlantic coast. The surf was not bad; some rolling waves but nothing major. The organizers for this event were conscious of the many-first timers they had and kept the swim buoys fairly close in, so the water was not that deep. They also had a lot of support kayakers on-hand in case people got into trouble.
The Aug 21st race is part of the Publix Family Fitness Weekend Series. I believe all of their races are geared toward new racers, so I think they would provide the same level of support.

How is the water there? Thinking of doing the tri on aug 21 at ft desoto but am hesitant cos it is in the ocean... Is it choppy with big waves or calm?
