Let's join the Hillsborough Classic Film Society again for a comedy classic. It's free, but you have to reserve your spot in advance. (Strictly speaking, it is not required, but they really do want you to.) Showtime is 2, so I'm setting the start time fifteen minutes early as usual. For the full details, read their writeup below:

THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY will present His Girl Friday at 2pm Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the Passmore Center, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough. There will be an introduction before the film and a discussion afterwards. As always, the film is open to the public and free, and the popcorn is free too.
His Girl Friday, a 1940 film directed by Howard Hawks, is a so-called “screwball” comedy starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, Ralph Bellamy, and Gene Lockhart. The screwball comedies were marked by rapid-fire dialogue between the two antagonist/lovers; they were, according to David Fear, “that strain of comedy from the ‘30s and ‘40s characterized by fast-talking females, breakneck pacing and an all-around kookiness of character.” (Hawks made it his aim to break the record for fast talk set in 1931 by The Front Line. He succeeded: the dialogue is said to reach a speed of 240 words a minute, nearly three times the speed of ordinary speech, and no one has thought to try to break the record since.)
The film ranks high on many lists; it’s number 19 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 best American comedies. It has a 99% positive rating among critics on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and a high score of 94 on Metacritic. Gustavo Furtado of Duke University will lead the discussion. Gustavo is associate professor of Romance Studies and Arts of the Moving Image as well as Co-Director of the Amazon Humanities Lab at Duke. His publications include the book Documentary Filmmaking in Contemporary Brazil: Cinematic Archives of the Present as well as articles in (among others) The Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies, New Cinemas: Journal of Contemporary Film, and in the anthology Latin American Documentary Film in the New Millennium. He has led our discussions in Black Orpheus, High Noon, The Big Sleep, Tampopo, and most recently, in The Battle of Algiers.

Please notice that you are not required to register in advance, and you will not be turned away if you don’t, but the Passmore opens its doors and provides help for the Society on the weekend when they are normally closed.
