Tucson Backpackers Pages

Welcome to the Tucson Backpackers,
AKA TUB (TUcson Backpackers)!

We are a friendly group of people and welcome new members! We all love backpacking, and Tucson is a great starting point for it - all year-round. Also, we do other outdoor and social trip activities: car camping, urban camping, canoeing/kayaking camping, hiking, socializing, sporting events, and classes/training.

We are always looking for your help and input, and new leaders and trips! Tucson Backpackers is ran by volunteers.

Make sure to drop us a email: tucsonbackpackers@gmail.com

We are happy to post your trips, preferably backpacking ones.

Tucson Backpackers common goals:

Be safe! - Respect the land! - Respect each other! - Have a good time! - Have a successful outing!

There are fees for joining this club. To attend any trip we require that you pay an annual (yearly) 'membership fee' of $5. This is basically an annual deposit to ensure commitment for your RSVP, plus helps offset group costs. See the 'membership option' tab below and the statement in the files section. Other than that, we just share the trip expenses as in permit fees and gas.

The most common way to get into backpacking is to start with hiking, check our your camping gear on a car camping trip, join a beginners' backpack, and then get hooked! A strong hiker might just jump right in, and being a good hiker is a prerequisite to make backpacking a truly enjoyable experience - for you and the others. So here are some local outdoor links to get in shape:

  • Ramblers - Tucson's oldest group with the youngest membership, open to non-students
  • SAHC - Southern Arizona Hiking Club, a very established group with established hikers; membership fee and newsletter
  • Hiking Meetup - social hiking group, oldest and largest of the young meetup groups
  • The Alt - the alternative to the other groups, smaller groups, more advanced trips
  • X - the extremes: Beginners' T-Hill and advanced trips. Needs approval and regular participation.
  • Sierra Club Rincon Group - hikes with an environmental touch, membership fee to join, but guest are always welcome, optional donation.
  • There now also is a meetup site showing Sierra Club events, linked as Sierra Club Singles.
  • SAAC - Southern Arizona Adventure Company, our former mother ship and sponsor also goes hiking and camping.
  • Take-A-Hike - meets in Mesa, posts are un-edited and un-screened - sometimes very adventuresome trips.
  • Arizona Backpacking Club - mostly Phoenix members, many great trips, membership fee
  • I haven'd joined a trip with the Friends Camping, Hiking and Outdoor Club out of Tempe yet, but the calendar looks good.
  • Same is true for the 'OTHERS', ie. Outdoor Travel Hiking Exploration Recreation Sports, out of Phoenix.
  • Tucson Hikers - Southern Arizona's Hiking Network, a message board with hiking related info
  • Arizona Hikers - an outdoor related community message board
  • Hike AZ - great resource for trails, descriptions and maps!

Remember - all trips are private trips. ALWAYS HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND LEVEL. If unsure do your own research about the trip and check the trip host's expectations.

Backpackers who bring alcohol on an event shall act and share responsibly! Backpackers are encouraged to review federal, state, and local park and open space laws about alcohol consumption before attending a trip.

Finally, you all needed to acknowledge in your profile that to our general rules (eg. guns, smoking, etc.), make sure you really did.
