An open letter to members of the Atheist Book Club:
Hi! My name is Shelley Mountjoy and I've recently become Organizer of this Meetup group. Many of you may recognize me from Beltway Atheists. A few of you have been asking me what my plans are for this group so I wanted to go ahead and address those questions.
In 2007, I met Paul Hoyt on the forums of the Rational Response Squad. Paul lives in Lynchburg and I was in Richmond at the time. We had our first opportunity to meet in person this February when Paul and a group from Lynchburg drove up to Richmond to see a presentation by Lori Lipman Brown. Afterwards Paul mentioned that he really enjoyed the trip and would never have know about the event if it wasn't for our chance meeting on the RRS forums. Consequently, we thought it would awesome if there was a way for local groups to communicate at a central location. Paul proceeded to "get the ball rolling" on this and Virginia Freethought Renaissance (VFR) was born. Paul is the President of VFR and I am the Vice President of Outreach.
VFR is a democratically organized educational group that seeks to unite VA freethinkers into a single coalition to participate jointly for communicative purposes. Of the 22 secular organizations in the state of VA, 10 have chosen to associate with VFR. We're also intending to expand into the DC Metro area. Additionally, VRF has always intended to hold an annual conference as well... we would have done so in August, however I unexpectedly became the Organizer of Beltway Atheists and consequently was not about to devote as much time to VFR as necessary for such a large event.
So why am I telling you all this? Over the holiday, this meetup site will be transitioned to be the new home for VFR on Meetup. I hope you decide to stay along with us. I do intended to continue a book club type discussion on a bi-monthly basis however we will also be advertising events on the request of our associate members and scheduling some of our own. Please be patient. We're in the process of reorganizing, however we'll resume regular events at the beginning of the year. If you have any questions, or you'd like to help out with the planning or organization of events, please let me know. I can be reached at [address removed]

This meetup page was formally known as "Atheist Book Club." The book club type discussion will continue on a bi-monthly basis however we will also be advertising events on the request of our associate members and scheduling some of our own. As a result, not all of the events on our calendar are hosted by VRF - we will cross-list events at the request of any of our associate member organizations.
