AngularJS July: Widget Directive Workshop

Hey folks,

Lets try something different for this month's meet up. We're very excited to have Darryl Pogue hosting a workshop where we will be building a self-contained voting widget that touches on topics like directive controllers, isolated scopes, events, services and unit testing. Bring a laptop to follow along and build your own.

Doors open at 6:30 and we'll begin workshopping at 6:45.

A big thank you to Axiom Zen for hosting this month's meet up!

Hey all - for anyone wanting to learn more AngularJS , I saw a tweet that some AngularJS ebooks and tutorial videos from O'Reilly are 50% off until tomorrow. Just thought I'd pass along the link since I imagine many fellow attendees of this meetup might be interested . See the discounted titles here http://shop.oreilly.com/category/deals/angularjs.do?code=WKANJS

Wish I could have made it to the workshop! If anyone is currently looking for an awesome opportunity, the company I am currently working for, ShareDesk, is hiring for an AngularJS developer - http://www.sharedesk.net/blog/angularjs-developer/

Thanks for the workshop, Darryl (and Axiom Zen for hosting). Someone asked about the "controller as" syntax. Here's the project with the controllers and views converted... https://github.com/anthonychu/vangularjs-meetup-july-16-2014

Thanks Anthony! ControllerAs looks great for avoiding some of the unintuitive scope inheritance behaviour.

Maybe a good topic for someone to cover in a future lighting talk?

Thanks Darryl for great talk. It was inspiring and made me want to do a talk of my own. I am curious as to what people want to see next. I am comfortable presenting on anything from application (and multi-application) structure, build process, directives, unit tests, angular infrastructure (like how events work), etc.

Good talk. A demo on testing with Karma would be nice.

Definitely room to build on this example. You could also look at implementing a service for handling poll responses.

    Great talk! Thanks Darryl!

Yes, talk about promises would be good. also adding to the example about $rootScope.emit or broadcast and possibly login/authentication/token would be great!!!!

    Hi everyone,

The format of the meetup will mostly be live-coding some directives and explaining how they work. We'll start simple and get gradually more complex.

If you'd like to follow along and write the directives as we're going through them, you should bring a laptop, and download the starter project from https://github.com/vangularjs/vangularjs-meetup-july-16-2014
You can grab it as a zip file directly from https://github.com/vangularjs/vangularjs-meetup-july-16-2014/archive/master.zip if you prefer.

There's some minor setup involved, but basically you'll want NodeJS installed to run the bundled server. Instructions in the included README.md should work regardless of OS.

    See you tomorrow!
