VanJS: HTML5 Games
Details
After a long wait, VanJS is back. This time we have a themed VanJS on the topic of HTML5 games. Mozilla is flying in Rob Hawkes to talk about HTML5 gaming in general, and local HTML5 game dev Stephen Belanger will be talking about Peint2, a high-performance drawing framework for canvas.
The State of HTML5 Games: Rob Hakes is the author of Foundation HTML5 Canvas and is a Technical Evangelist at Mozilla. He leads the gaming side of their work within the developer community.
In this talk Rob will give you an overview of the new role that browsers are adopting to support games and the technologies and processes that are helping that happen. This includes areas like 2D graphics with canvas, console-like 3D games with WebGL, gamepad support, immersive full-screen experiences, multiplayer games with WebSockets, and much more.
As well as focussing on technology, Rob will cover some of the solutions available for monetising games and distributing them across the Web. He will also look into some common issues that are often raised, like the protection of game assets with open technologies.
Peint2 - High-Performance, Evented Canvas: Stephen Belanger is a lead developer at local startup Blackcomb Games. "Drawing with the raw Canvas API is awkward and often inefficient. Peint2 abstracts rendering quirks from simple object placement and provides a more efficient, event-based renderer that only draws when there are changes to draw."
Agenda:
Peint2 - High-Performance, Evented Canvas The State of HTML5 Games Beers afterward We'll be at SFU Harbour Centre as we usually are, this time in room 1700. As usual, first come first served.
