July 27th is going to be the hottest programming night of the summer:
Neo4j + Haskell + R + Erlang + Scala + Beverages = Good Times
For the inaugural meetup of the Graph Database Group (https://www.meetup.com/graphdb-vancouver/), Peter Neubeuer and Andreas Kollegger have come all the way from Sweden via America to demo Neo4j plus describe the best uses for this exciting technology including solving problems related to social graphs.
Graph databases provide a richer data model by storing all data in a network of nodes and relationships. And that is hot! For example, in social networks it's easier to use a graph to represent friend relationships and do queries like "get me all the friends of my friends friends".
The next wave of applications based on recommendation engines and social data will likely utilize graph technology like Neo4j.
Before the Neo4j talk we will also have 10 min intro presentations on 4 functional languages that are suitable for interacting with graph databases like Neo4j. This is a great opportunity to get exposure at a high level to the strengths and weaknesses of each language.
Erlang - Suitable for concurrent, distributed systems with Ken Pratt
Scala - A concise, elegant and type-safe language with Paul Lambert
R - Statistically explore data sets with Tavis Rudd
