Functors, Applicatives and Monads, oh my!

My colleage Byron will give his talk on the basic theoretical underpinnings of FP in Scala. It's at least an hour if you include questions and examples.  Here's his synopsis:

  1. Typeclass basics in Scala -- A brief introduction to implicit parameters and the encoding of typeclasses.
  2. The Equals typeclass
  3. The Functor -> Monad stack of typeclasses with examples.
  4. Why we care -- A few examples of real benefits of using these constructs in our code.

Didn't expect so early direct assault on Scalaz core, with succinct code-full clarity, thanx

I want to thank you all for attending. That was quite a bit of fun.

I welcome any comments or follow up questions. This was a first time deal for me so I'd like to improve as best I can.

As promised, here is the git repository:

This lecture covered a number of topics and was very dense. The intent was not to teach these concepts in any depth. It was instead intended to spark interest. I hope I have sparked curiosity.

    See you next meetup!

As usual, the building is locked after hours. We'll be downstairs to let people in until 7:00 or so; if you're late please call/text (604)[masked] or (604)[masked] and we'll come get you.

Can anyone volunteer a location? We'd have to pay to have it in our building.

As I haven't yet made a meetup, I'd like to schedule this for after the next one at the earliest so I can meet everybody first!
