About Yoga With Your Dog
I first thought about doing yoga with dogs when I realized mine loved being with me as I did my own yoga practice. Then when I was in yoga class I found myself thinking: 'This is time I could spend with my dogs!
Dogs bring their unique personalities to the mat. One of my dogs believes she is a yoga teacher, one takes a nap, and one takes in the scene like she is surveying her flock. I find I show up to my practice more relaxed and connected when my dog is with me. Some participants have been surprised how relaxed their dogs were following practice. Other dogs seem more playful and engaged after yoga. Being in that energy seems to have as varied an effect on dogs as it does on humans. It is also a wonderful companion activity for your aging, or injured pets. You can both derive some healing energy from learning to relax and breathe together.
New Treats at Dogadillo
Did you know? Agave is a natural sweetener with a low-glycemic index. This translates to an ingredient that, when used, will sweeten the taste but not cause a sharp rise or fall in blood sugar levels. This and other attributes of the agave makes this cookie a good choice for diabetic dogs, or any dog trying to watch it's weight.
Hemp seed is an amazing superfood that is so full of vitamins and omegas that we are surprised we haven't been using it all along. All 9 essential amino acids, a perfect ratio of Omega 3 and 6, magnesium, iron, zinc, carotene, vitamin C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6 and more are all contained in this easily digestible seed!
Did you know? Besides it's breath freshening properties, mint has also been known to calm an upset digestive system. It also contains vitamin A, B12 and C. Combined with Carob, whose properties also support the intestines, this treat is beneficial to your dogs taste buds and belly!
Did You Know? Cheese is a good source of calcium, which helps dogs build strong bones and teeth. Cheese also contains a large amount of other essential nutrients such as phosphorous, zinc,
vitamin B12 and vitamin A.
Why Yoga With Your Dog?
Time spent with your dogs is a gift in our busy lives. The gifts of bringing your dog to your mat are several. Your dog has an opportunity to practice self calming and settling into a social situation with unknown humans and dogs. You may deepen your relationship with your dog by discovering your sense of calm and focus directly influences your dog's behavior.
Class Description: We spend one hour in a regular Hatha yoga practice outdoors in a beautiful tree filled setting. Throughout the practice the person may use T-touch, massage or simple petting or touch if they wish with their dog. Usually within several minutes most dogs are asleep or sitting quietly in the calm activity even if they would usually bark or be active in such a setting. Some take a session or two to discover their own Zen.
Why yoga for you?
Yoga is the perfect compliment to Nia, Zumba, Pilates, strength and weight training or running. Stretching and strengthening with yoga keeps muscles from tightening to lengths that begin to shorten stride and pull bones out of natural position. Over time yoga corrects: asymmetry in muscle groups, alignment, and posture- all of which help optimize your movement in other sports or daily activity. Yoga helps depression, anxiety, blood pressure, and digestive process. Yoga at core though, is about seeking a deeper relationship with your body, mind, and spirit.
